　　Abstract

　　What is the role of Chinese theories of literary fiction in a globalized world？ Is there something wrong with Western paradigms unable to accommodate Chinese literary experience？ Can Chinese theories of literary fiction offer researchers in the West a deeper understanding of the “true” nature of fiction， and put into question Eurocentric viewpoints and paradigms and contribute to the creation of more “objective” transcultural theories of literary fiction？ I will try to answer these questions through discussing Chinese fiction and theories of literary fiction in ancient and modern times in the context of influential theories of fiction in the West， such as Gregory Currie’s The Nature of Fiction， Kendall Walton’s Mimesis and Make-Believe， and in addition， Gu Ming Dong’s Chinese Theories of Fiction： A Non-Western Narrative System. I aim to show that there are certain issues or obstacles to the creation of “truly objective” transcultural theories of literary fiction， such as the normative impact of Western theories， the foundation of theories of literary fiction， and the very “nature” of literary fiction itself.

　　About Lena Rydholm 

　　Lena Rydholm is Professor of Chinese at the Department of Linguistics and Philology at Uppsala University. Rydholm’s research interests are classical and modern Chinese literature， mainly poetry， fiction， and literary theories， theories of genre and style and transcultural theories.
