Ye Mei is committed to the exploration of regional culture and ethnic minority culture. The UNESCO World Cultural Novels note on the translation of her work says: “She has captured the attention of the literary world and readers with her depiction of the customs of the Tujia nationality in western Hubei. Her works contain in-depth explorations of women and women’s liberation issues.” Over the years, she has always adhered to the front-line life experience in the ethnic minority areas, and recorded the true feelings of the people and the times with true and eternal words. Critics believe that Ye Mei’s work is “writing with roots”.

The essay collection Through the River of Dreams is filled with the bright colors of Gesanghua, the wonder of phoenix tail bamboo, the mellowness of Pu’er, and the straightness of pine. It is like an index of multi-ethnic culture, which allows people to read from it a wider view of the cultural landscape of ethnic minorities. The long documentary work Meiqing - A Chinese Woman’s Entrepreneurial Miracle uses the brushwork of scattered culture and the daily narrative to write about the growth experience and dream-seeking process of the heroine Zhai Meiqing, which has both literary and social significance. The work provides an inspirational sample of contemporary youth-oriented entrepreneurship by means of personal success. It shows the typical image and unique style of the new private entrepreneurs, sings the praises of the historical process of reform and opening up, and outlines the development track of China over the course of more than 30 years.

In the latest narrative essay collection The Love of Root River, Ye Mei embraces mountains and rivers, living spirits, and human beings with whole-hearted devotion, transcending worldly utilitarianism and narrowness. It shows the Chinese nation, me within you, and you within me as well as the unique living ethics, cultural values and dreams of all nationalities, expressing the author’s profound humanistic feelings. By writing about the beautiful and magnificent natural scenery of the motherland, she shows different national cultures, living conditions, spiritual qualities and unique life awarenesses. Her language is immersed in Shen Congwen’s timelessness, profundity and clarity, showing multi-ethnic history, culture and soulful thoughts. This is unique in contemporary prose creation.
